How to choose an LLM

Start with the task, not the brand. Hard analysis, long documents and agentic coding reward the premium tiers. Drafting, summarizing and everyday questions are handled well by mid-tier models at a much lower price. Bulk classification and extraction are cheapest on small models. Whatever you choose, test it on a real piece of your own work and compare the result with what you would have produced.

How we evaluate

Most LLM comparisons rely on abstract benchmark scores. Our reviews focus on professional fit: what kind of work each model handles best, where it falls short, what it costs, and which of our profession pages recommend it. Pricing comes from vendor pricing pages. Read our editorial policy and benchmark methodology for details.

Frequently asked questions

Which LLM is best for professional work?

There is no single winner. Premium models such as Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra lead on the hardest reasoning and coding work, mid-tier models such as Claude Sonnet 5 and GPT-6 Sol handle most daily tasks at a fraction of the cost, and small models such as Claude Haiku 4.5 and GPT-6 Luna suit high-volume automation. Our profession pages show which model we recommend for each role.

What does "per million tokens" pricing mean?

API models are billed by the amount of text processed. A token is roughly three quarters of a word, and prices are quoted per million tokens for input and for output. A typical email or short document is only a few hundred to a few thousand tokens.

How often is this page updated?
